Cmdr.), Aide to the Assistant Secretary of the
Navy, in 1923. As a Vice Admiral, Ghormley
would exercise overall command of the
invasion of Guadalcanal in WWII.

At left is Admiral Robert Coontz, outgoing Chief of Naval Operations.
Coontz led the Navy during the Washington Conference of 1921-1922 which
inaugurated the era of Treaty limitations. At right is his successor, Rear
Admiral Edward Eberle, about to begin his four year tour. A former Acting CNO
in 1918-1919, Eberle had helped plan the Navy's post-WWI demobilization.
